Somalia and Kenya Deepen Cooperation on Long-Term Economic Planning

Nairobi, Kenya – May 2026 — A high-level delegation from Somalia’s National Economic Council (NEC), led by Dr. Hassan Adan Hosow, Executive Director of the NEC and Chief Economic Advisor to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, met with the Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat (VDS), led by Acting Director General Mr. James Maina, to strengthen cooperation on long-term economic planning and national vision development.

The discussions focused on strengthening collaboration on national planning frameworks, advancing long-term development visions, and exchanging institutional experience in strategic planning. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of evidence-based planning as a foundation for sustainable economic transformation.

During the meeting, the Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat announced that Kenya is developing Vision 2063, a successor framework aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063. Kenyan officials expressed interest in drawing on Somalia’s recent experience in long-term vision development, particularly the formulation of Centennial Vision 2060 (CV2060).

Launched in Mogadishu in June 2025 by President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, CV2060 is Somalia’s 35-year development blueprint designed to guide the country’s transformation into a stable, inclusive, middle-income economy by the centenary of its independence. The framework is structured around seven National Transformation Phases and aligns with Agenda 2063.

The NEC, established in 2018 as the President’s principal economic advisory body, has led Somalia’s visioning process under the leadership of Dr. Hosow since 2022.

Speaking during the meeting, Dr. Hosow emphasized the value of regional collaboration, stating: “This partnership is important to strengthen cooperation, enhance technical knowledge, and support the efforts of the two countries towards sustainable economic development.”

Both institutions agreed to continue technical cooperation through knowledge sharing, capacity building, and future consultations on national vision development. The engagement reflects broader efforts by Somalia and Kenya to deepen bilateral cooperation across economic, trade, foreign affairs, immigration, and regional security issues.
