Functions

  • Provide sound economic advisory services to the President and the members of the political council.
  • Produce policy analysis and briefings.
  • Conduct research that informs policy-makers and investors on economic trends
  • Develop comprehensive policies that contribute to the creation of inclusive economic growth.
  • Contribute to efforts that ensure integrated economic policies and plans between the Federal Government and Federal Member States.
  • Create platforms that encourage effective social dialogue on economic matters and make accessible issues of economic policies to the general public.
  • Provide a holistic support to the Government to comply with internal and international regulations, and the fiduciary requirements of external financial assistance, from bilateral and multilateral sources.
  • Assist the Government on issues of regional and international economic cooperation and trade agreements

The Focus

The focus of the national Economic Advisors work will be to:

  • Conduct objective and fact-based economic research and analysis on topics of high priority that will be of importance in realizing the essential national objectives of economic recovery and development;
  • Undertake periodically broad-based assessment of the national economy, integrity institutions, as well as key priority sector issues to inform sound decision making and policy reforms;
  • Prepare and organize stakeholder’s consultative meeting that will facilitate the presentation and discussion of research findings and recommendations so as to formulate policies and strategies for action;
  • Organize in association with relevant government agencies, NEC conferences semi-annually to generate and disseminate knowledge on issues of critical importance, and to enhance national institutional capacities to formulate and implement sound economic and financial management policies;
  • Commission research within the NEC and through the recruitment of international scholars and experts to inform the sound management of the national recovery, poverty reduction, and broad development issues. Based on the findings of the analytical policy research conducted by the Council and the international experts, the NEC will present its findings and recommendations periodically for government leaders and the change agents in the country;
  • Build collaborative research with like-minded institutions in the sub region and beyond, organize study tours to benefit from other countries experience, and assist in building a domestic research capacity through networking with academics and internship.
